Zone 10a

Average Low Winter Temperature

30 to 35 Degrees F

Last Frost: Between Feb 1st and Feb 15th

First Frost: Between Dec 15th and Jan 1st

Zone 10a is a warm season zone having very mild winters, hot summers, a long growing season, and a bit of climactic variability. The variability will be derived from factors such as humidity, rainfall, and exposure to sunlight in your specific location.  It is important to select species, varieties or cultivars that are adapted to your specific microclimatic conditions.

Growing Considerations:

  • Be on the watch for extremely high temperatures.

    • Be prepared to adjust watering and irrigation practices as needed

    • Consider the use of wetting agents in the lawn to conserve water or reduce irrigation requirements

    • Consider the use of drought and heat-tolerant garden and ornamental plants

  • Plants that have a chilling requirement and are best adapted to temperate regions may be hard to cultivate in this zone

  • Be prepared to scout for pests such as insects and diseases following mild winters.

  • Consider overseeding your lawn with cool season species in the Fall
