Zone 1a

Average Low Winter Temperature

-60 to -55 Degrees F

Last Frost: Between July 1st and July 15th

First Frost: Between Aug 15th and Aug 31st

Zone 1a is considered one of the most challenging areas to cultivate plants due to the short growing season and extreme winter cold.  Selecting hardy species and varieties or cultivars will prove to be essential here.

Growing Considerations:

  • Short growing season of approximately 50 – 60 days

    • Consider using a covered or indoor growing facility such as a cold frame or greenhouse to extend the season

    • Consider a black soil cover to thaw soils more quickly in the spring in preparation for planting

  • Typically, poor native soil that may be either rocky, poorly drained, or have low inherent fertility.

  • Day length due to high latitude can prove challenging and force growers to plan carefully.

    • Add lighting or focus on planting in an area that receives maximum sunlight exposure
