-35 to -30 Degrees F

Last Frost: Between May 1st and May 15th

First Frost: Between Sept 15th and Oct 1st

Zone 3b has cold winters and a somewhat short growing season. A wide variety of plants can be grown in this zone. Selecting cold hardy species and varieties or cultivars is recommended.

Growing Considerations:

  • Short growing season of approximately 120 – 150 days.

    • Plan planting dates intentionally to be sure plants mature before the first fall frost

  • Highly variable soils that include rocky, sandy, and high clay soils.

  • Consider the use of mulches, cold frames, hoophouses, or greenhouses to protect from the cold and using raised beds which warm more quickly and drain more readily in the Spring

  • Start garden plants indoors
